Grassroots Organizer

Position Summary

The Utility Reform Network (TURN) is California’s leading statewide advocate for electric, gas, and phone customers of utility companies regulated by the state’s Public Utilities Commission. TURN makes use of legal proceedings, policy advocacy, and grassroots mobilization to promote affordable utility bills, sustainable energy policies, and regulation of the utility industry in the public interest.

The Grassroots Organizer is responsible for coordination and hands–on implementation of organizing campaigns that mobilize grassroots, organizational, and political resources to promote utility policy that serves the public interest. A key component of this position is to develop and coordinate a system for individual consumer advocacy that integrates the resolution of individual complaints as part of a larger strategy to involve consumers in organizing campaigns. This position will partner with a team of staff and volunteer organizers to develop grassroots and institutional support for TURN’s agenda to win consumer–oriented energy and telecommunications policies.

Areas of Responsibility

— Develop and coordinate a system for individual consumer advocacy that integrates the resolution of individual complaints as part of a larger strategy to involve consumers in organizing campaigns.
— Develop and manage organizing strategies and campaigns to build public support for TURN regulatory and legislative activities.
— Coordinate membership recruitment and grassroots mobilization activities including doorknocking, housemeetings, phone banking, public meetings and demonstrations.
— Implement a leadership development strategy to build the capacity of TURN activists to become leaders in recruiting other members, volunteering their time, and representing the organization to the media and the public.
— Cultivate and mobilize support and campaign participation from allied organizations throughout the state.
— Participate in resource development from funding sources by designing programs and drafting grant proposals.
— Solicit support for TURN policy agenda from elected officials and opinion leaders through organizing delegation visits, policy briefings, educational materials, and regular contact.
— Participate in developing and coordinating an online advocacy strategy to mobilize letters of support and participation in TURN events, and drive traffic to the website.
— Write articles and reports for TURN publications and produce program related materials.
— Other organizational activities as assigned by supervisor.

Reporting and Supervision
— The Grassroots Organizer reports to the Organizing Director.
— Assists in supervising organizing interns and volunteers.

Qualifications
1. Minimum of two years experience as an organizer implementing organizing campaigns, recruitment drives, leadership trainings, direct actions.
2. Demonstrated commitment to racial justice and progressive social change and experience working in multiracial and multilingual organizations.
3. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
4. Flexibility to work on evenings and weekends as necessary, valid drivers license, and willingness to travel within California and nationally.
5. Bilingual Spanish–English verbal and writing skills are highly desirable.

Salary
$35,000–$45,000 depending on experience, plus generous benefits package, including 100% employer paid premium for family health, dental, and vision, and employer paid pension plan.
